Saafiyah Hansi

Saafiyah is a PhD researcher at ISEY. Her research looks at how screen media shapes young children’s experience of their home environment, using the lab’s wearable home-recording technology and EEG. She is interested in how children pay attention to their surroundings and is currently developing a study on whether children continue to process a caregiver’s speech while engaged with a screen. She is supervised by Prof Sam Wass, Dr Ira Marriott-Haresign and Dr Pierre Labendzki. She also works as the lab’s technical assistant.

Saafiyah completed an MSc in Psychology at Birkbeck, University of London, with distinction. Her dissertation, supervised by Prof Ulrike Hahn, used Bayesian modelling to examine how social context modulates the experience of pain. Alongside her MSc, she contributed to research on body ownership and on categorical bias in spatial memory. She holds a BSc in Pharmacology from King’s College London and a Postgraduate Certificate in Applied Data Science, also with distinction. She works mainly in Python, with experience in scientific computing and machine learning.

Saafiyah has around a decade of experience teaching and leading science in mainstream and alternative provision secondary schools. Her wider interests include computational approaches to child development and, drawing on her teaching background, making research useful to families and to the practitioners who work with children.
